Though I could not feel paper between my fingers, smell ink, or taste the tip of a pencil, I could see and hear the world with all the clarity of the Living. They, on the other hand, did not see me as a shadow or a floating vapor. To the Quick, I was empty air.

In the class of the high school English teacher she has been haunting, Helen feels them: for the first time in years, human eyes are looking at her. They belong to a boy, a boy who has not seemed remarkable until now. And Helen—terrified, but intrigued—is drawn to him. The fact that he is in a body and she is not presents this unlikely couple with their first challenge.

But as the lovers struggle to find a way to be together, they begin to discover the secrets of their former lives and of the young people they come to possess. Surprisingly, though, the story held my attention. I finished the story in one day. At times, though, I felt she sacrificed plot and character for a fancy sentence, but this was minimal. The characters of Helen and James were believable.

Years of living among modern people desensitized them to their old-fashion beliefs. Their relationship progresses quickly, yet believably. At times, though, I found Helen grating, but James was easily the requisite book boyfriend: handsome and flawed.

Neither Helen nor James remember much about their past lives until they find bodies to inhibit. In the end, A Certain Slant of Light is about redemption. And James will leave you pining for a ghost boyfriend of your own.

A Certain Slant of Light is the perfect read for a rainy day. I recommend finding this book and saving it for a time when you need a reason to cheer. I give it 4 out of 5 stars. A Certain Slant of Light Summary & Study Guide

Stuck between life and death, she clings to her hosts and immerses herself in literature until one day she discovers that a student can see her. The two bond, and Helen learns there is a lot more to life than what she knows of death. Helen has been dead for over years, but she doesn't remember much about her life before death. She isn't certain what she did that kept her from heaven. All she knows is that after she died, she heard a woman reading poetry, grasped onto the woman's skirts, and was pulled out of her grave, unbeknownst to the woman. Helen stays with her host until her host dies, and when she feels herself slipping back into the icy clutch of her grave, she latches on to a new host. As this book begins, she is on her fifth host, and all of her hosts are involved with literature as poets, writers, and playwrights.
