Knowledge of basic notions of physics, mathematics and general biology as specified in the School of Psychology enrolling requirements.
At the end of the course,the student is expected to: - know the basic principles, the main theoretical models and the main research methods in Comparative psychology and and in the other fields that investigate animal behaviour Ethology, Behaviour genetics, Behavioural endocrinology, Behavioural ecology ; - know the main methods to measure animal behaviour; know the main techniques for automatic recording of animal behaviour in laboratory and in field; - know how to design a scientific research in order to answer to scientific questions on animal behaviour; - acquire the skills for critical reading and understanding scientific papers on animal behaviour.
Evaluation of learning achievement will be made in the final examination which assess understanding of course topics, knowledge and integration of key concepts, processes, and research methods in the field of Animal Behaviour. Final examination is written and consists of 12 open-questions four with long and eight with short answer The exam is done on a computer interface and can be taken by the student also in English.

Understanding of the main concepts and theories Critical and analytical thinking Appropriate use of the terminology of the field. Historical introduction: ethology and comparative psychology. Methods of investigation in animal behaviour.
Development of behaviour. Behavioural genetics. Hormones and behaviour. Motivation and decision processes. Comparative cognition. Evolutionary approach to the study of animal behaviour. Social organization. Altruism and cooperation. Sexual selection and sexual conflict. Parental care.
Evolution of human behaviour. Introduction to evolutionary psychology. Planned learning activities and teaching methods:. The course consists of lectures, discussion of scientific articles, practicals conducted in laboratory on the main research tecniques, and classroom exercises on the design of an experiment.
Lectures will be complemented by with practical examples with the aid of audio-visual material. Practicals and classroom exercises will be devoted to deepening the topics covered in lectures.
