Nov 05, Prine Vipointe rated it really liked it. Siempre espero lo peor. Quedo feliz. Y cuando llega, porque de que llega, llega, no me deprimo ni me decepciono.
Es lo acostumbrado. Es lo normal. Es como es. Pero no necesariamente como debe ser. May 18, Mike Frost rated it really liked it. I've only read a few novels in Spanish, and I'd have to say that I enjoyed this one the most.
Unabashedly riffing on the themes and plot of "The Catcher in the Rye," Mala Onda managed to still seem entirely fresh by mixing in the political backdrop of the constitutional referendum of that continued Pinochet's rule for another 8 years. Matias, the Chilean Holden Caufield, is a decadent youth struggling with the phonies who surround him, all of whom, from his parents to his friends to his love interest, are more interested in themselves and their worldly pleasures than they are in what's going on with their government. Matias fights to find a different way, but he never really has a chance. I loved the first person narrative, the Chilean slang, the Santiago setting with which I was so familiar, and the many 80s pop culture references, which highlighted the fact that this focus on "me" was not solely a Chilean malady.
A must read for anyone who has spent time in Chile. Jan 08, Adam rated it liked it. Sex drugs, and Pinochet. Jul 20, Daniela L. Y eso alcanza a doler un poco. Pero en todo caso la lectura fue muy disfrutable. Jan 09, Natalia rated it it was ok.

No me gusto para nada, los personajes tienen actitudes que me molestan, ademas que hubiera sido mas interesante si hablara de la clase baja o media de los 80's en el golpe militar no de la clase alta pff no me gusto :c.

This book was a really interesting view of the Pinochet era, especially in contrast with A Nation of Enemies , which I read before. Jun 09, Sebastian Guzman Garcia rated it it was amazing. Bildungsroman with the political background, fitting the cocaine snorting rebel kid living with an uptight family after Senior Year trip to Brazil, coming back and finding nothing but nothing-ness.

From McOndo to a Contemporary Film Production
This current study focuses on the effects of neoliberalism on the Chilean sociopolitical period of postdictatorship — by studying a new generation of filmmakers in the work of Alberto Fuguet. Distant from their community, these individuals are unable to participate in any collective project. The purpose of this essay is to examine Fuguet as a key figure of a new generation of filmmakers whose work reveals the sociopolitical effects of the neoliberal project in the post-dictatorship period — When crossing urban spaces, the characters of these movies waver between detachment and estrangement.
It is also Fuguet's debut novel , first published in Mala onda is set in Chile during a ten-day period in September, , around the time of the Chilean constitutional referendum. The novel examines the Chilean emulation of American consumerism and pop culture , in the context of a growing opposition to the dictatorial rule of Augusto Pinochet in Chile. The novel takes place in in Santiago, Chile during the political referendum of the country's future with Pinochet. The protagonist visits Rio, Brazil briefly in the beginning of the novel. Other than these, the main location is the urban setting of Santiago.
