Dates and Times: Sunday, March 4th p. Saturday, March 10th p. Sunday, March 11th p. Upon his return home, Leonardo announces to the women that they will be hosting a dinner at their house, and informs them that he has engaged Lucietta to Filippetto, son of his friend Maurizio.

More people arrive: Felicita, accompanied by her friend Count Riccardo, and her husband Canciano. Margherita and Lucietta are getting ready for their guests. They are criticized by Leonardo for putting so much importance on their clothes. Simone and Marina are the first invited guests to arrive. Leonardo and Simone start reminiscing about the good old times. Margherita gives her consent. Filippetto comes wearing a mask and dressed as a woman; the couple see each other and like what they see…very much.

However, things do not go as planned and the scheme is discovered! As expected, this triggers accusations and threats of various kinds. There is a strong possibility that the wedding could be cancelled and that the unreasonable husbands would have their wives pay the consequences for their actions. How does the story end? According to the intelligent ideology of the good-natured author…naturally! The comedy was an immediate success. The characters are, in fact, taken directly from the life of the middle Venetian bourgeoisie, an inexhaustible source of inspiration for our author.

They are grumpy and irascible human beings, an extreme example of how a bourgeois, whom by nature is very attentive to the economic aspect and the respectability of his family, could degenerate and become narrow-minded and tyrannical.

I rusteghi
