UBIQUITOUS COMPUTING FUNDAMENTALS JOHN KRUMM PDF

First introduced two decades ago, the term ubiquitous computing is now part of the common vernacular. Ubicomp, as it is commonly called, has grown not just quickly but broadly so as to encompass a wealth of concepts and technology that serves any number of purposes across all of human endeavor. Under the guidance of John Krumm, an original ubicomp pioneer, Ubiquitous Computing Fundamentals brings together eleven ubiquitous computing trailblazers who each report on his or her area of expertise. Starting with a historical introduction, the book moves on to summarize a number of self-contained topics. Taking a decidedly human perspective, the book includes discussion on how to observe people in their natural environments and evaluate the critical points where ubiquitous computing technologies can improve their lives. Among a range of topics this book examines:.

It will be an essential reference to researchers and those who want to learn more about this evolving field. Abowd, Georgia Institute of Technology First introduced two decades ago, the term ubiquitous computing is now part of the common vernacular. Ubicomp, as it is commonly called, has grown not just quickly but broadly so as to encompass a wealth of concepts and technology that serves any number of purposes across all of human endeavor.

While such growth is positive, the newest generation of ubicomp practitioners and researchers, isolated to specific tasks, are in danger of losing their sense of history and the broader perspective that has been so essential to the field's creativity and brilliance.

Among a range of topics this book examines: How to build an infrastructure that supports ubiquitous computing applications Privacy protection in systems that connect personal devices and personal information Moving from the graphical to the ubiquitous computing user interface Techniques that are revolutionizing the way we determine a person's location and understand other sensor measurements While we needn't become expert in every sub-discipline of ubicomp, it is necessary that we appreciate all the perspectives that make up the field and understand how our work can influence and be influenced by those perspectives.

This is important, if we are to encourage future generations to be as successfully innovative as the field's originators. Read more Read less. Review " Abowd, Georgia Institute of Technology. This book is so clear and amazing! The author gets to envolve the reader and exaplain subjects in a easy way. I appreciate and relly recommend it. This is a great book to start learning about Ubiquitous Computing and state of the art in this field.

If you are a computer science student who wants to get an overview of this field or you just want to get a sense of different areas in ubiquitous computing then this is the book. The book is really interesting from chapter 1 to chapter 9. If you are too "techie" then you might not like chapters on "Ubiquitous Computing Field Studies" or "Ethnography in Ubiquitous Computing".

But these chapters will definitely make you appreciate the diversity of this field and help you learn different research approaches which researchers from other areas employ in their work.

Overall I'll say this book is a good investment and a must read if you want to start learning about Ubiquitous Computing. I got this second hand from Amazon. I was a bit skeptical about buying it second hand but I must say I'm impressed at the condition of the book.

Changed my perspective about used books. I would definitely buy books from this seller in the future as well. I highly recommend it to anyone starting out in the field of ubicomp. Specifically, I like two aspects of the book. First, the team of contributors assembled by John Krumm provides a comprehensive introduction to the myriad topics that make up the ubicomp field.

The fact that ubicomp is an interdisciplinary field is exciting, but getting an overview of the field may seem like a daunting task. The textbook provides this overview.

Second, paraphrasing Aaron Quigley's assessment of his chapter, the book provides "an entry point" to the world of conducting research in general, and ubicomp research in particular. The contributors discuss the tools used in various aspects of ubicomp research, from prototyping, to user studies, to data processing. The individual chapters help the reader formulate research questions and steps, and provide valuable tips on how to report on results.
